Urology of Virginia plans to expand into a newly constructed 42,585-square-foot building adjacent to its current location at 225 Clearfield Avenue in Virginia Beach. The new facility will house a cancer center on the first floor, an ambulatory surgery center on the second floor, and physician offices and a conference room on the third floor.
The company will invest a total of $17.8 million in capital improvements and business property through this expansion. The new facility creates 66 full-time positions including eight physicians and 58 staff with combined average salaries of $72,811.
The Virginia Beach Development Authority has awarded Urology of Virginia an Economic Development Investment Program grant in the amount of $150,000 based on these plans to expand its Virginia Beach workforce and the amount of capital investment.

Harris, director of Virginia Beach Economic Development. “Not only will residents of our City and region have access to improved urologic health care, but Urology of Virginia conducts world-class medical research and development that attracts medical professionals from around the world.”
For the Department of Economic Development, the expansion aligns with its target industry plan to attract, retain and assist with the expansion of biotech, research and healthcare companies.
“We also know that having practices like Urology of Virginia in Virginia Beach attracts even more businesses within this industry sector,” added Harris. “We anticipate a return on this investment of $118 to every $1 invested within a year.”
Urology of Virginia currently has 157 people on staff including 24 physicians and attracts patients from the United States and around the world. In addition to the urology medical services, the practice includes the Schellhammer Urological Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports education of residents and fellows; the Paul F. Schellhammer Cancer Center; and the Devine‐Jordan Center for Reconstructive Surgery and Pelvic Health.
The practice was formed in 1997 when nine urology practices merged. It included Dr. Charles Devine Sr.’s practice, which is world renowned. That program has been associated with the beginning of Eastern Virginia Medical School and has been the department of urology for EVMS training the urologist of the future. The practitioners at Urology of Virginia are nationally recognized, board certified and committed to new and innovative treatments and cures.
