Virginia Beach Leaders Look at Trade Opportunities in the Philippines

A growing economy. Robust infrastructure.

The Philippines are attracting attention from local business and city leaders. More than 30 people attended “Doing Business in the Philippines,” a luncheon held April 28 at Town Center City Club that explored opportunities in the country.

Maria Roseni Alvero, commercial counselor with the Embassy of the Philippines, led a presentation about the country’s demographics and economy. The Philippines is the 12th most populated country in the world with more than 99 million people. Its merchandise exports reached $54 billion last year. Alvero said the Philippines are focused on a manufacturing resurgence to “address the gap between the upper and lower classes.”Typhoon Haiyan devastated parts of the country on Nov. 8, 2013, and killed more than 6,000 people.

Naomi Estaris, liaison for trade relations between Virginia Beach and the Philippines, said several Virginia Beach-based businesses have expressed interest in helping to rebuild or offer resources. A trade tour mission is planned for May 28 through June 3.Maritime, cyberspace, food, furniture, call centers – a variety of industries will be the focus of the trade mission, said Estaris.

“The partnerships are going to be really incredible,” she said. Olongapo, Philippines, is designated as Virginia Beach’s “Friendship City,” which opened the door for educational and charitable exchange. Tallwood High School Global Studies and World Languages Academy recently hosted the first cultural exchange program with students from the Philippines.
